Simone Biles needs no introduction. The record-breaking Team USA gymnast has racked up 11 medals across three Olympic Games, not to mention numerous medals from national competitions and world championships. The gymnast credits her healthy lifestyle habits as key to optimal performance—and that includes hydration.

So her recent partnership with Sodastream is quite fitting. The Sodastream Fountain provides thirst-quenching drinks featuring delicious flavors, and Biles loves mixing it up with her own favorite combinations. And in an interview with EatingWell, the athlete shares more ways she’s able to stay hydrated throughout her busy days.

Learn more about her favorite drinks, her go-to comfort meals, morning routine and more in our exclusive conversation.

How important is hydration to your routine, and what are some of your favorite ways to stay hydrated throughout the day?

In the gym, we would always carry around our own customized water bottles so that we’re reminded to stay hydrated. What we do is at such a high level, and we’re burning a lot of calories, so we need to fuel our bodies properly. I think the easiest way is to carry around a reusable water bottle.

Do you have a morning routine that you stick by?

I feel like since I’m all over the world, I can never keep a morning routine because every single day looks different. I feel like I’m never home for more than four days, so it always looks different. But whenever I’m home, I get up, take the dogs out, feed them breakfast and then feed myself some breakfast.

I’m not the greatest at it every single day when I’m not training because I just tend to forget to eat sometimes, but in the morning, my ideal breakfast would be some boiled eggs, some chicken sausage and a piece of toast.

Do you drink coffee?

I do not. I tried drinking coffee last year and then that community bullied me, so I was like, you know what? You guys can keep your coffee. I’ll stick to teas and waters and such. I like a good chai, herbal teas, a good peppermint tea.

Since fall is here, do you have any favorite comfort meals or cozy dinners that you love?

I love a Crock-Pot meal. I love to cook lasagna soup or chicken noodle soup, those would be my favorites.

Why partner with Sodastream for the new Sodastream Fountain campaign? Do you have any go-to flavors?

In gymnastics, I’ve always created my own path, and there are endless possibilities. So I felt like this Sodastream partnership mimicked that because I never believed there was only one way to do things. Some of my favorite flavors are the Mug [root beer] zero sugar and the strawberry-watermelon zero sugar.

I think it’s just so much fun that you can customize the carbonation, the serving size and how strong you want the flavor to taste, and I feel like that’s kind of what we do in the gym. We put our own spin on things, so I thought it was the perfect partnership.

What does “eating well” mean to you?

Just fueling your body properly depending on your day to day, whatever you’re doing. Especially as athletes, we need to fuel our bodies properly so we’re able to perform and exert the amount of energy that is required from our coaches and the demand of our sports. To me, eating well could still be having treats at the end of the night or a little snack here and there. It doesn’t limit it or cut it off, it just means in proportion. I’ve always been a huge fan of eating protein, especially leading up to competition, but I’m no stranger to a cookie or ice cream here and there. I think it’s a good balance.
