‘80s Rock Icon Recalls Health Issues Becoming So Bad He Couldn’t Even Sing ‘Happy Birthday’

Jon Bon Jovi is talking about his road to recovery after suffering vocal cord issues so bad that he couldn’t even sing “Happy Birthday.”

The 64-year-old rocker told an interview with the Australian program A Current Affair on Tuesday, Oct. 20, that he is feeling “phenomenal” after undergoing a vocal cord medialization to fix a damaged cord.

“I didn’t lose faith, but had [my doctor] told me it was going to be four years, I might’ve contemplated saying, ‘It’s been great’ [and leaving his office],” he said, per People. “Because the process was so damn long and I would see the progress, but it was incremental. It was inches. I couldn’t sing ‘Happy Birthday.'”

But, it took the Bon Jovi frontman four years to get to the point where he could feel comfortable getting back on stage. He admitted he was scared to “compromise the legacy” and just “hold the mic out to the crowd.”

“I realized that it took four years. That four years was my doing. I don’t go out [on tour] after the two years. People were saying, ‘It’s fine, let’s go.’ Ask the promoter Paul Dainty how many times he’s had on a piece of paper a tour booked and I’ve said, ‘No, can’t do it. Just don’t do it.’ And after the four-year process I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s ready,'” he explained to the Australian outlet.

The band came back with a bang thanks to a residency at Madison Square Garden and a sold-out tour of UK and Ireland earlier this year. Earlier this week, the New Jersey rockers announced seven new dates on their Forever Tour, starting in March.

The “Bed of Roses” singer said he finds it “joyous” to be back on stage and to “sing without thinking about singing.”

“In 2019 and 2022 for sure, every note I was white-knuckling that microphone. ‘Is that in tune? Is that in tune? Is that good enough? Is that enough?’ That was real every night. It was not worth doing,” he explained.

He admitted his wife was brutally honest about his voice. But, that meant that now he knows that he actually sounds good again. “When I walked off that stage in Nashville and I said to [wife] Dorothea, ‘That was pretty good!’ I believed it. I was like, ‘That’s pretty good.’ She goes, ‘No. It wasn’t.'”

“The beautiful thing that I aspired to for these years was, I have 18 albums. I want to be able to pick any song from any record and know that I can do them,” The “Livin on a Prayer” revealed. “And that’s what was happening by the end of Wembley [Stadium]… We’re playing all the hits but I can give them all the album tracks that people love.”

In June, Bon Jovi gave fans an update on his health after the surgery. “It was longer than I’d ever expected, but it had to be right. We never lost faith,” Bon Jovi told People.

“I think that this is a rebirth,” he added about touring again. “It is simply about the joy.”
