At 68, Denise Austin Demonstrates ‘Great’ Move to ‘Strengthen’ Abs ‘Over 50’

  • Denise Austin shared a quick exercise that strengthens the abs.

  • The 68-year-old fitness pro said it’s a great way to squeeze in a workout during the busy holiday season.

  • “Little movements like this that you can do anytime, anywhere WILL add up!!” she wrote.

Denise Austin has plenty of exercises that require nothing but personal determination and a little bit of floor space. Now, the fitness guru, 68, is adding another easy one to her toolbox with a recent Instagram post in which she demonstrated a “great” workout that targets the abs, glutes, and legs all in one go.

Austin shared the move in a brief clip—she said it targets “meno-belly,” the term she uses to describe mid-section weight gain that may affect people during menopause. “It also works your legs and booty,” she said.

She began standing with her hands behind her head, elbows pointed in opposite directions. She then lowered into a squat, returned to standing, and then bent into a standing twist crunch, taking one elbow to the opposite bent knee. She then repeated the sequence using the other arm and leg.

“Really sit back, so you’re getting that booty,” she said. “Do this for one minute.”

Austin wrote that the “squat and twist move” will “help strengthen the abs and obliques while also engaging the lower body.” She ended her post with a note of encouragement that’s especially welcome around the holidays when it’s easy to fall out of routines, fitness included. “It’s all worth a try!!” she added. “Remember, workouts don’t have to take hours in a gym. Little movements like this that you can do anytime, anywhere WILL add up!!”

And she’s right. There’s even research to back this up, one being that “exercise snacks”—also known as short bursts of activity like this move of Austin’s—not only improve fitness, but also have the potential to improve heart and lung health. And, by proxy, it may help you live a longer, fuller life. So when Austin says it all adds up, she means it. Every twist and crunch counts!
