Did you know you can tour the house from A Christmas Story? Not only that, but now it is available to book for overnight stays, too. After the doors lock at 5 p.m., it becomes a private time capsule where you can live inside the world of the beloved 1983 holiday movie.

“Most people don’t expect how peaceful and homey it feels once the doors lock and it’s just you inside. The house looks like a movie set during the day, but at night it feels like an actual, cozy family home with a holiday twist,” says Ary Dickerson-Marrero, General Manager at the House from A Christmas Story.

This home is one of America’s most nostalgic overnight stays and one of Cleveland’s most charming attractions.

Stepping Straight Into the Movie

There are many things that fans will appreciate from the time they walk into this house. Every corner seems to match the movie. Staying overnight takes the immersive experience to a whole other level.

With full access to the entire home after hours, guests can curl up in the living room beneath the towering Christmas tree, reenact scenes in the bedrooms, or examine the iconic bathroom with its bar of Lifebuoy soap.

“From the famous Leg Lamp glowing in the front window to the kitchen setup, we restored the home as closely to the film as possible,” Dickerson-Marrero explains. “There are also replicas and thematic props guests can enjoy throughout their stay.”

Even the smallest details like 1940s-style labels and period kitchenware quietly build a sense of familiarity. It’s movie nostalgia you can reach out and touch.

The Story Behind the Bucket-List Stay

The house is owned by CEO Joshua Dickerson, who began his journey with the company back in 2008 as a warehouse employee. His mission in offering overnight stays was to help fans live within the movie they love so much.

“People wanted the full experience,” Ary says. “The inspiration behind offering overnight stays is simple: fans want to live the movie, not just tour it. Staying overnight creates a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list experience for movie lovers, families, and nostalgia seekers.”

Since opening, the house has welcomed members of the original cast. Ian Petrella (Randy), Zack Ward (Scut Farkus), and Patty Johnson (Head Elf) have returned for signings, events, and celebrations. Over time, the home has built a tight-knit extended family of both cast and fans.

Christmastime: When the House Becomes a Living Holiday Card

Although the house is available year-round, there is simply nothing like experiencing it during the holidays.

“We keep the décor classic. It’s warm, nostalgic, and true to the 1940s,” Dickerson-Marrero says. “But every year we add little touches to keep things feeling fresh.”

The living room is illuminated with vintage Christmas lights. The tree is dressed in movie-accurate decorations. The Leg Lamp beams from the window. The house is at the heart of the Tremont neighborhood which, come December, transforms into its own festive village. Locals stroll past glowing windows, nearby shops put up holiday displays, and the whole street seems to hum with seasonal charm.

“It really does feel like stepping into a Christmas card,” she adds.

Nostalgia Guests Love and Details They Don’t Expect

While guests know the big moments, the small touches can really bring up memories of the film and big emotions.

“You feel the nostalgia even if you can’t pinpoint why,” Ary says.

It’s the tiny, period-accurate details that do the heavy lifting. Easter eggs are tucked onto shelves for fans to notice. The house also has props from memorable scenes on display, and there are carefully recreated spaces that look nearly identical to the set décor of the film. It’s the sort of place where each visit reveals something new.

The biggest surprise of all? How familiar and cozy it feels at night.

Planning Your Stay

Overnight guests check in at the gift shop at 3 p.m. and check out at 11 a.m. The house operates as a museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so during tour hours, overnight visitors relax in the Loft suite or explore Cleveland until they gain full access to the home after closing. (Loft stays include tour tickets, so they can also choose when to take the house tour.)

Exploring Tremont and Cleveland

Part of the fun of staying at the house from A Christmas Story is exploring its historic neighborhood. Tremont is a creative, walkable district filled with locally loved restaurants, cafés, and boutiques.

Don’t miss:

  • The Rowley Inn – Located right across the street from the movie house, The Rowley inn played a big part in the film’s production, and it was a spot where cast and crew hung out after filming was done for the day.

  • Cloak & Dagger– Situated next to Lincoln Park in the Tremont neighborhood, this cocktail lounge serves creative cocktails and delectable vegan dishes in a cool atmosphere.

  • The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame – As a one-of-a-kind museum that’s a true celebration of rock and roll, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame takes visitors into the world of rock and its cultural impact. It also hosts film screenings and special events.
