A mom of four is questioning whether she’s overreacting after a bizarre hotel-breakfast incident with her husband — but based on the internet’s reaction, she’s not alone in feeling frustrated.
In a post shared to r/AmIOverreacting on Reddit, the 36-year-old mom explains that she, her husband, and their four kids (ages 14, 13, 11, and 9) were on a five-day hotel stay. Exhausted from travel, the family agreed they would sleep in a bit but still make it downstairs for the free breakfast, which ended at 9:30. Her husband set an alarm for 8:15. He was the only one who woke up.
Instead of waking the kids or his wife, he headed down to the breakfast buffet alone — and then returned at 9:30 to wake everyone up with the news that they’d missed it. When she asked why he didn’t wake anyone, he insisted it wasn’t his responsibility because “everyone else slept through the alarm.” Their 11-year-old daughter even chimed in that the alarm never woke her, raising questions about whether it ever went off at all.
When the mom suggested ordering food for the hungry kids, her husband got angry, saying they “should have gotten up” for the free meal. He didn’t bring up extra muffins or juice either — just announced the missed opportunity, grabbed a snack for himself, and later tried to play the whole thing off as a joke.
Commenters were not amused.
“How hard is it to wake someone up?” one person wrote. “If my husband got up for breakfast, he’d either bring food back or make sure we didn’t miss it.”
Others speculated the behavior was intentional. “He wanted a quiet meal without the family,” one commenter said. “Then he shamed everyone for it.”
Another added: “If he chose not to feed his own children the free breakfast, he has to order food to make up for it. Period.”
Another wrote: “He wanted a quiet meal without the wife and kids. It’s just that simple. Selfish.”
Across hundreds of replies, the theme was unanimous: this wasn’t a harmless mistake — it was petty, dismissive, and left his own kids hungry.
As one user put it, “People who care for their family don’t behave like this.”
