A station wagon is a two-box body style with an extended roofline and a rear tailgate, designed to haul people and cargo long before SUVs became household staples. These versatile haulers offered room for beach gear, fishing poles, and even the family dog—sometimes all at once.

From Woody-paneled prewar marvels to turbo-charged safety legends, each wagon on this list reshaped the way families travelled. Get ready for a joyride down memory lane, complete with skylights, chrome fins, and jokes about who peeked at the map last.

Chrysler Town & Country (1941–82)

The original Town & Country introduced steel-and-wood construction straight from the factory, setting a luxurious tone for family travel. Its sweeping wood panels were matched by a smooth inline-8 engine that cruised highways in style. Passengers felt like they were aboard a rolling lodge, complete with leather-strapped picnic baskets. Today, owners still marvel at its blend of prewar elegance and practical design.

Jeep Wagoneer SJ (1963–83)

The Wagoneer SJ pioneered full-time four-wheel drive in a station wagon, giving families the freedom to venture off the pavement. Its woodgrain sides and tall roof made it look as rugged as it was capable, perfect for camping weekends or tailgate parties. With a robust straight-6 or optional V8, it handled both dirt roads and winter blizzards with ease. Hunters and anglers still swap stories about crossing icy creeks in their SJ wagons.

Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad (1955–57)

The 1955 Nomad turned heads with its two-door styling, sweeping tailfins, and generous chrome trim. Built on the Bel Air platform, it offered both the utility of a wagon and the flair of a show car at drive-in theaters. Inside, families packed coolers and surfboards under that iconic sloping roofline. Today’s collectors prize original Nomads for their blend of sporty design and everyday practicality.

Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser (1964–72)

As one of my favorite lines from That ’70s Show said, “You can literally… cruise the vista!” From its 1964 debut through the final 1972 model year, the Vista Cruiser’s raised roof and twin skylights turned every drive into a panoramic sightseeing tour. Inside, families relaxed on plush foam seats surrounded by woodgrained decals and enjoyed the handy swing-or-drop tailgate. Under the hood, smooth Rocket V8 power kept vacations spirited, while the airy glass-roof cabin allowed everyone to share the sky.

Ford Country Squire (1950s–91)

The 1966 Country Squire cemented its status with faux woodgrain paneling and room for up to eight passengers. Its V8 engine provided smooth highway cruising, while the Magic Door swung open in two directions for effortless loading of luggage and picnic baskets. Suburban families considered it the ultimate rolling living room, complete with soft suspension and plush seating. Even today, the Country Squire’s silhouette is instantly recognizable.

Mercury Colony Park (1957–80)

The Colony Park dressed woodgrain panels in extra chrome, hidden headlights, and upscale grille styling. Introduced in the late ’50s, it became a favorite among Hollywood stars and vacationers alike. Parents appreciated early safety features, such as padded dashboards and factory-installed seatbelts. Spot one today and you’ll hear stories about camping trips and tailgate concerts.

Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon (1946–56)

Buick brought yacht-inspired luxury to the station wagon with the Roadmaster Estate. Dual sunroofs let fresh air sweep through eight-passenger cabins, while a Corvette-derived V8 under the hood offered surprising pep. Tailgate picnics felt decidedly upscale, complete with built-in coolers in the rear armrests. Modern collectors covet these wagons for their unique blend of opulence and old-school ruggedness.

AMC Eagle (1979–87)

Long before modern crossovers, the AMC Eagle combined four-wheel drive with the comfort of a wagon. It tackled dirt roads, snowy passes, and muddy campgrounds while offering the storage and seating families needed. Its weather-proof canvas sunroof was a summer favorite, turning road trips into stargazing parties. Eagle owners still praise its adventurous spirit and simple mechanical design.

Volvo 240 Wagon (1974–93)

The boxy Volvo 240 stood for safety, reliability, and space in one tidy package. Its three-point seatbelts and crumple-zone engineering set new standards, while optional ABS and headlight wipers demonstrated Volvo’s commitment to smart innovation. With a rocket-ship sunroof and flat-four engine, it carried kids, luggage, and even a small vintage guitar amp to garage-band shows. Spotting one today still earns a nod from every well-informed driver.

Wrapping up Your Journey

These ten station wagons prove that family travel never had to be dull. From Woody-paneled pioneers to turbo-charged Swedes, each model brought comfort, style, and a dash of adventure to highways across America.

As SUVs dominate today’s market, these rolling legends remind us of an era when the journey was as fun as the destination. Whether you once folded down a rear seat or simply admired the chrome fins at a drive-in, these wagons still spark smiles—and maybe a playful debate over who got shotgun.
