Air travel can be intimidating, even for seasoned travelers. First, you have to buy the ticket itself, keeping track of when and how you should purchase. (Now, you can even break your ticket strategy down by the best time of day to buy.) Which level of airfare grants you a checked bag, and which will have you waiting until Group Z to board the plane? And that’s not taking the airport experience itself into account, which can also be overwhelming. (If you’ve been through the maze of terminals at several very busy Southern airports, you’ll understand.)
With so many choices out there, how do you know which flight will reliably give you the most bang for your buck while still granting crucial legroom on the plane and a comfortable travel experience? Don’t fret—we’ve got good news.
Delta just announced a new option to their comfort class fares that allows travelers to enjoy the perks of Delta Comfort—with a few caveats—at a more reasonable cost. The new Delta Comfort Basic will begin rolling out on November 19 in “very select markets,” the airline announced in a press release.
“This new offering is designed to give customers more choice—allowing them to tailor their journey based on what matters most to them, whether it’s comfort, value or convenience,” the release says.
So what is it, exactly? Delta Comfort Basic is the lowest tier in Delta’s Comfort product line—the fare tier above Main Cabin. (In layman’s terms, the fare is still a step up from Delta’s economy travel options.)
New Comfort Basic grants travelers many of the same perks they would ordinarily find in Delta’s leveled-up Comfort experience, like extra legroom, dedicated overhead bin space, Zone 3 boarding, and complimentary alcohol on many flights.
But there are also a few familiar limitations to keep in mind with this lower-cost fare—many of which budget-focused travelers are used to from Delta Main Basic flights. Seats for Comfort Basic are assigned after check-in, fares are not eligible for upgrades, and changing or canceling your flight will subject you to fees.
Unlike Delta Main Basic, however, the new Comfort Basic tier is eligible for Delta Sky Club access (with valid entry credentials) and the ability to earn Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) and SkyMiles.
The new Comfort Basic option is only very selectively available on “Delta-marketed and operated domestic itineraries,” the release says, and cannot be booked with miles—only dollars. The cost difference for this new Delta offering varies based on the flight.
With earlier boarding, guaranteed bin space, and a complimentary glass of wine, we’ll certainly raise a toast to the open skies in Comfort Basic.
