“For more than five decades, this Santa Clara theme park has brought people together, created family traditions and served as the backdrop for unforgettable memories,” says Dave Vosejpka, park manager of California’s Great America. “The Farewell Season is an opportunity for generations of Bay Area guests to return, spend time with family and friends, and revisit the attractions and traditions that have made the park in Santa Clara, California such a meaningful part of the community.”
For millions of thrill-seekers, parents, and grandparents across Northern California, the news marks the end of a golden era of regional amusement. Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced this week that California’s Great America will officially celebrate its final year of operation in 2027, wrapping up more than a half-century of roller coasters, carousel rides, and summer traditions.
First opening its turnstiles in 1976 as part of America’s Bicentennial celebration, the 112-acre park has served as a central rite of passage for Bay Area childhoods. From classic wooden coaster drops on The Grizzly and inverted loops on Flight Deck to first-time carnival games and funnel cake stops with grandparents, Great America anchored family milestones long before Silicon Valley’s tech campuses grew up around its perimeter.

The park’s impending closure stems from a massive 2022 real estate transaction in which the property’s underlying land was sold to real estate developer Prologis, with a lease agreement running through June 2028. Six Flags confirmed it has opted not to renew the lease, making 2027 the official swan song for the park’s attractions, team members, and devoted community.
Rather than quietly shutting down, Great America will launch a dedicated “Farewell Season” to give longtime visitors a proper chance to say goodbye. The final stretch will kick off in March 2027 and run through Labor Day on September 6, 2027. Throughout the season, the park will host legacy-themed programming, retrospective celebrations, and dedicated storytelling activations honoring the iconic rides that defined Northern California youth for 51 years.

For locals wanting to revisit their favorite rides multiple times before the gates close permanently, Six Flags has made 2027 Gold and Prestige Season Passes available, providing unlimited visits throughout the farewell run. To cushion the loss for regional thrill enthusiasts, Gold and Prestige passholders will also receive included admission to sister property Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, which pairs roller coasters with up-close wildlife and marine animal exhibits.
While the park’s impending final coaster circuit on Labor Day 2027 will undoubtedly be an emotional moment for generations of riders, the upcoming season ensures that Bay Area families have six full months to make one final memory where it all began.
