2003 Classic That Initially Flopped Ranked No. 3 ‘Greatest Rock Song of the 21st Century’ by Rolling Stone

In 2003, one of the most iconic rock songs of the modern era was released. More than 23 years after it first came out, Rolling Stone declared The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” as the No. 3 “Greatest Rock Song of the 21st Century.” The track earning that massive honor is especially noteworthy given that it initially flopped commercially.

Rolling Stone Just Declared ‘Mr. Brightside’ by The Killers as the No. 3 ‘Greatest Rock Song of the 21st Century’

On October 27, 2026, Rolling Stone published its ranking of the “200 Greatest Rock Songs of the 21st Century So Far.” The list was topped by “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the No. 1 slot, followed by The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” as the No. 2 pick. The outlet then ranked “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers at No. 3, which is a huge compliment to the legacy of the popular rock track.

The Killers initially released “Mr. Brightside” on September 29, 2003. That means Rolling Stone chose it as one of the greatest rock songs of the modern era more than 23 years after it first came out.

While explaining its decision to place “Mr. Brightside” so high on the list, Rolling Stone noted the obvious: that it is one of the “defining tracks for rock’s early-aughts” and that it is a stadium staple. The outlet also praised the song for singer Brandon Flowers’ anguished vocals and its highly emotional and affecting lyrics. Ultimately, it was described as an “anthem every Gen Z festivalgoer will know by heart.”

‘Mr. Brightside’ by The Killers Initially Flopped When It Was Released in 2003

From a 2026 perspective, it is hard to overstate how successful The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” has been over the last two decades. Still immensely popular many years later, it is currently ranked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Rock Streaming Songs chart. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the website states that it has spent a total of 381 weeks on that chart alone. That means the track has spent more than seven years on that chart, which is a staggering accomplishment.

Considering how popular “Mr. Brightside” has been, it seems hard to fathom that it didn’t become an instant hit. However, as a December 2023 New York Times article notes, it took more than a year for the track to reach the Billboard Hot 100 at all. Furthermore, once it cracked the chart, it peaked at No. 10.

The song’s initial performance was so underwhelming that The Killers’ singer, Brandon Flowers, told The Shortlist in May 2015 that “Mr. Brightside” would fail today. As an NME article quoting his comments shows, he argued that the track underperformed after it was released but was given a second chance that tracks no longer receive. “‘Mr Brightside’ was released twice [in 2003 and 2004]. It didn’t go down well first time. It wouldn’t have the opportunity in the current climate.”
