Passengers using Glasgow Airport often rely on the M8 motorway to reach the terminal from the city and surrounding areas.
For visitors arriving in Scotland or residents heading away on holiday, delays on this important route can affect airport transfers, connecting journeys and plans to reach flights on time.
A major infrastructure project is about to change how motorists and some airport bus services navigate the area.

The work will take place over two weekends, with an extensive set of restrictions planned for the second closure period.
Nov. 7 and 14 Weekend Closures Shut 16 M8 Lanes at Junctions 21-24
Glasgow Airport is warning passengers to expect significant road delays on November 7–8 and November 14–15, 2026, as contractors undertake refurbishment work on two motorway footbridges.
Amey is carrying out the work on behalf of Transport Scotland to reinstate the Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges between M8 Junction 21 (Seaward Street) and Junction 23 (Dumbreck).
According to Traffic Scotland’s official closure notice, the restrictions will apply during these periods:

Second weekend: 6 p.m. Saturday, November 14, until 1 p.m. Sunday, November 15.
During the first weekend, the M8 eastbound will close between Junctions 24 and 22, including the Helen Street eastbound entry slip road. The westbound main and secondary carriageways will close between Junctions 22 and 24, alongside the secondary Junction 21 Carnoustie Street on-slip.
The M77 will remain open in both directions during this first closure.
The second weekend will bring wider restrictions. All 16 lanes of the M8 will close, with the following additional restrictions:

Traffic Scotland warns that motorists should avoid the affected area where possible. Delays of up to an hour were experienced during similar closures in 2024, and comparable disruption is possible this time.

First Bus 500 and X8 Routes Divert Alongside Citylink Airport Delays
The motorway works will affect several bus services connecting Glasgow Airport with the city and surrounding destinations.
First Bus has confirmed that its Service 500, which connects the airport with Buchanan Bus Station, and its X8 service to Silverburn will operate diversions during both weekends.

The airport-bound Service 500 will divert through Pitt Street, Newton Street and the Clydeside Expressway before rejoining the M8. The return service towards Buchanan Bus Station will use Renfrew Road, Hillington Road, the Clydeside Expressway, Argyle Street and Hope Street.
The X8 will also follow different routes depending on its direction of travel. First Bus expects delays and advises passengers to check its official diversion information before departing.
A separate complication affects Scottish Citylink passengers. The recently introduced 903 service to Glasgow Airport will not be diverted because of the M8 works themselves. However, the separate closure of Renfrew Bridge means it cannot serve Victoria Park, Scotstoun and Yoker.
Citylink also operates routes between Glasgow and Campbeltown, Oban and Skye that serve the airport. Those services will follow diversions during the motorway works, although all their stops will remain served. Longer journeys are expected.
Transport Scotland Targets Nov. 21-22 Contingency for Crane Lifts
The motorway work requires large cranes and specialist lifting equipment to reinstall the refurbished bridge spans. Consequently, the operation can only proceed when weather conditions are suitable.

Transport Scotland has provisionally identified November 21–22 as a contingency weekend if adverse weather forces postponement of either of the planned operations.
Passengers should check Glasgow Airport’s travel information and Traffic Scotland’s updates before setting out.
A Glasgow Airport spokesperson said: “Significant delays are expected across the surrounding road network and diversion routes. As such, passengers traveling to and from the airport during this time are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.”
