10 surprising items banned by TSA. What travelers should know.

Every day, the Transportation Security Administration screens around 3.3 million carry-on bags to ensure no dangerous items could impact air passengers’ safety.

For travelers, this means following the rules put in place to keep security checkpoint lines moving along. By now, most travelers are aware of the longstanding TSA rules prohibiting liquids over 3.4-ounces and any weapon-like items into their carry-on baggage. (The agency banned three items, including cordless hair tools, in checked luggage, in Aug. 2025 but also recently scrapped the shoes-off policy.)

Still, getting flagged at security can make even the most seasoned traveler break a sweat, especially given that the list of items not allowed on planes is extensive.

“Airport security can be stressful, especially when you’re carrying items you didn’t realize were restricted,” Paul Stewart, travel expert and founder of My Baggage, told USA TODAY.

Here are some surprising items that are banned by TSA.

What items are banned by TSA?

For the most part, items that are seen as hazardous are not permitted on planes. This includes those that could be used as weapons – even if that’s not their intended purpose – like lacrosse sticks or bowling balls.

Another common item that poses a risk is lithium batteries, which can overheat and catch on fire. They’re not allowed in checked baggage and must be in your carry-on, although certain restrictions still apply. In 2016, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was banned in 2016 due to its battery being prone to overheating and exploding, causing a cease on its production and a recall. Passengers who tried to bring one onboard were denied boarding.

“To avoid delays, always check TSA and airline rules before packing, keep your luggage organized, pack liquids and electronics separately for easy access, and make sure any items that could need extra screening are on top or in an easily accessible pocket,” said Stewart.
