Hollywood romances have a reputation for ending almost as quickly as they begin, so when a famous couple announces a breakup, people tend to assume the story is over. Sometimes, though, separation turns out to be an intermission rather than the final scene.
A surprising number of long-lasting celebrity relationships include at least one period when the couple decided they were better off apart. Some separations lasted only days; others stretched into years. Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin came within weeks of ending a decades-long marriage, while Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor spent several years separated before unexpectedly reconnecting during the pandemic. For Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, meanwhile, the breakup happened so early that many fans probably never knew about it.
Reconciliation obviously does not guarantee a perfect relationship, and every couple below has handled its difficulties differently. Still, their stories show that a breakup does not always mean two people have reached the end. Here are eight celebrity couples who separated, reconsidered, and eventually found their way back to one another.
Kit Harington and Rose Leslie
Their Game of Thrones romance eventually became a real-life marriage, but Kit Harington and Rose Leslie did not follow a perfectly straight path to the altar. The pair reportedly began dating after becoming close while filming the HBO series, then faced breakup reports in 2013. Neither publicly confirmed the split at the time.
By 2014, however, they were being spotted together again, and their relationship later became public. Harington has since acknowledged that they went through an on-and-off period, saying they tried to push each other away for a while. They married in Scotland in 2018 and later welcomed two children.

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo began dating in 2012 after initially connecting through email. Their romance moved quickly, but it briefly fell apart the following year.
The separation did not last. Levine and Prinsloo reunited in 2013, and the reconciliation came with a major surprise: an engagement. They married in Mexico in July 2014 and went on to have three children. More than a decade after their wedding, their relationship has lasted far longer than that early breakup might have suggested.

Few reconciliations have happened as dramatically—or as quickly—as this one. Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin married in 1997 after an earlier on-and-off relationship and eventually raised three daughters together.
Then, in August 2022, Flavin filed for divorce after 25 years of marriage. It looked like one of Hollywood’s longest unions was genuinely finished. Instead, the couple talked through their differences and reconciled roughly a month later, stopping the divorce proceedings. Years later, they remain married, with Stallone continuing to speak publicly about the importance of Flavin in his life.

Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor married in 2000 and had two children before announcing their separation in 2017. Unlike many celebrity splits, however, theirs never became an especially hostile public battle.
Several years later, the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly changed their story. Stiller moved back into the family home so he could be with Taylor and their children during lockdown. Spending so much time together gave the couple an opportunity to reconsider their relationship. They reconciled, and Taylor later revealed that they worked on their marriage through therapy sessions conducted over Zoom.
